IB Diploma requirements explained

Reaching 24 points is necessary, but it is not the only condition. Subject grades, HL and SL totals, TOK, EE, and CAS all matter.

The 45-point structure

The Diploma total combines six subjects, each graded from 1 to 7, with up to three additional core points from theory of knowledge (TOK) and the extended essay (EE). The maximum is therefore 42 subject points plus three core points, or 45 overall. Standard level and higher level grades carry the same 1–7 value in the total.

Main award conditions

A candidate must complete six subjects, TOK, EE, and CAS. The main conditions represented by this calculator are:

The calculator assumes CAS is complete because CAS does not receive a numerical grade. Your school must confirm actual CAS completion.

Subject-group structure

A normal programme includes studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, and mathematics. The sixth subject can be an arts subject or another permitted subject from the earlier groups. Some interdisciplinary subjects can satisfy more than one group, subject to programme rules and school approval.

Why 24 points may still fail

A total of 24 or more does not override the distribution rules. For example, a candidate may reach 24 but miss the HL minimum, have too many grades of 3 or below, fail to complete CAS, or receive a failing TOK/EE condition.

Bilingual Diploma

A bilingual Diploma can be awarded in qualifying language combinations, including two Group 1 languages with at least grade 3 in both, or certain Group 3 or Group 4 subjects completed in a language different from the candidate’s Group 1 language. School-based syllabuses, additional subjects, and the extended essay do not themselves contribute to this award.

How to verify

Use the calculator for planning, then confirm your registration and award conditions with your DP coordinator and the International Baccalaureate’s official assessment information.
